Urvashi Barooah

Principal

How do you view your role with portfolio companies?

My role is to do whatever it takes to help our founders be successful. It could mean being a sounding board for ideas, making introductions, and above all, being there for them through thick and thin.

What defines an interesting market?

Almost any market can become interesting if approached in a novel way. Sometimes the best opportunities come from non-obvious places!

I get excited by companies where the founders…

Have unique or contrarian insights and are personally motivated to solve a problem.

How did your family shape your views on work?

Both of my parents are entrepreneurs in India. Growing up, I saw them surmount so many obstacles to keep their businesses afloat. They showed me what it means to hustle and never give up.

What’s one thing people might not know about you?

I come from a small town in India called Guwahati. I left home when I was 14 to attend boarding school, and lived in India, Hong Kong, and China before moving to the US. I speak Hindi, Assamese, and a bit of Mandarin. Living in many different countries taught me to embrace change and see opportunities in areas that others might overlook.

Favorite thing about San Francisco?

Urban hikes! And being so close to the ocean.

I joined Redpoint because I wanted to…

learn from some of the best investors and founders in the world!

Why did you choose to be a venture capitalist?

This job gives me the privilege of meeting and working with founders who are building the future!

What is the best trip you’ve taken and why?

I went on a camping trip to Patagonia during business school. We hiked for seven days through mountains, valleys and rivers with heavy packs on our back. The trip made me push the limits of my endurance.

What job would you be doing if you were not a VC?

I would be a wildlife photographer—I love observing nature!
